Following the death of her invalid mother, Birdie, she is shocked when she discovers that her father, George Bradley, intends to marry within the year. She is even more upset to find that his intended bride, Kate, only three years older than herself, is already pregnant. The two women finally manage to reach an armed truce and Helen decides to stop allowing other people to rule her life. She travels, meeting a woman from Georges past, who tries to help her come to terms with the present situation. While in Italy, Helen meets Paul, who is on an important photographic assignment. He is talented, streetwise, personable, and perceptive.

Helen is strongly attracted but later decides he was just a holiday romance particularly when he uses his perception to tell her some home truths. However, he pursues her when she returns to England and she begins to realise that he is also vulnerable due to events in his past life. She gradually falls in love with him although she is unsure if his feelings for her are as deep.

Their relationship is complicated by her fathers over protectiveness and his innate dislike of all that he thinks Paul stands for. Helens old school friends Tanya and Sandra rally round until Sandra causes serious trouble for both Helen and Paul by her thoughtless behaviour. This leads to Paul being injured and the realisation that he loves Helen. Meanwhile, Kate has given birth to a son, Christopher, and she and Helen have become friends to the extent that Kate supports Helen against Georges prejudice concerning Paul. It takes a death in the family to begin the process of bringing all the characters together with something near to tolerant understanding.
